Coming of Age in New Jersey: College and American Culture
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (April, 1989)
Author: Michael Moffatt
Average review score:

An Anthropological Study of University Students
The author is a faculty member in the Anthropology department at Rutgers University who decided to do a study of the students in traditional immersion fashion. To do this, he joined the incoming freshman class as an older student returning to school and lived in the dorm. The resulting book is a fascinating read, particularly for someone who was actually entering college around the same time as Moffatt's study. Moffatt covers the group dynamics, the forming and shifting of groups, and many of the aspects of college life.

I couldn't put it down!
One of the few college texts I actually READ. Required for a freshman anthropology class (this is almost 8 years ago now), I was thrilled by every word in this book... Easy to read, interesting, entertaining... I mistakenly loaned it to someone who never gave it back and have regretted it ever since. A must read for anyone interested in a look at college culture through the eyes of someone doing it again, 20 years after graduation.

Ghosts, pirates and treasure trove : the phantoms that haunt New Brunswick
Published in Unknown Binding by McClelland and Stewart ()
Author: Stuart Trueman
Average review score:

Hairraising!
This book is excellent if you believe in the supernatural and you are superstitios. With stories such as The Headless Nun & A Host of Ghosts, this book is excellent for the fearless type!

Unfortunate that its out of print
This book is a great read if you love ghost stories. New Brunswick, Canada is a little known province that was once referred to as "the realm of ghosts" due to the abundance of ghostly tales (whether they be fact or fiction). Trueman is a great storyteller and the book is well researched. If Amazon can't find it for you, check your local library for it (I've found it in most Ontario libraries).

Molly: Child Number 583
Published in Paperback by General Store Publishing House (18 October, 2000)
Authors: Mary Keenan and John Stevens
Average review score:

Heart-breaking orphan 'homes'
I've just finished reading this enthralling book, _Molly, Child Number 583_ . I have to say once I began reading, I could not put it down. To read about the author's years in the care of the nuns in what is euphemistically termed "homes" was heart-breaking. I recalled passing places like that as a child and wondering what spooky mysterious things were in the great grey stone building behind the locked iron gates where the nuns lived.

The author's intelligence, independence and strength of character are amazing. The book is not only a fascinating insight into the life of the nuns and the convents but a great story of courage and of heart. With persistence and intelligence she succeeded in her goal and succeeded in making a happy and successful life for herself.

Molly Child #583 - review by R. Sealey, Bsc, CA
Readers of popular Angela's Ashes will love Molly, Child #583 by Mary Keenan, a member of the Canadian Author's Assoc., Toronto chapter. What a special book: its sad yet happy story introduces us to a young woman who survives her rocky start and thrives in rought times. Poignant memories come to life as we meet frightened little Molly, share her cold childhood in a Maritime orphanage and witness her rude awakening to adulthood.

Abandonned to a cruel fate that she did not deserve, Molly learned to nurture herself, develop her resilience and fill her empty heart with warm thoughts. She kept searching for her mother and wanting to hear the truth about her family. This book glows with the light of hope. It resonates with deep feelings inside those of us who ache for happy times that might have been. Like Molly, we all hope to reconcile with our families of origin and understand how we came to be the people we are.

I didn't expect a memoir to be so suspenseful: this hard-to-put-down book deserves to be well read. It speaks eloquently about life's bittersweet experiences, heartbreaks and love. Woven throughout this uplifting story are practical guides for trusting ourselves, finding true happiness and learning about biological parents. Marvellous to cope so gracefully and write so well; contratulations Mary!

Your guide really helped to make our trip memorable
My husnand and I recently spent our honeymoon in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, Canada and enjoyed very much many of the places recommended in Traveler's Eastern Canada Companion. Hotels, restaurants, points of interest: this guidebook helped to make our trip one that we will remember fondly for years.

Fodor's 1999 Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island (Fodor's Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island)

Puffin along with Fodor's
Just returned from Nova Scotia and PEI - couldn't have done it without Fodor's to guide me. Found it particularly helpful for accomodations and dining. It would have helped to have a better idea how long the town-to-town trips take by car. While some roads are highways, others are more rugged and 60 miles can take 2 hours (without stopping to sightsee). But this is a minor complaint and overall this guide was excellent (so was the trip!)

History of Brunswick, Topsham and Harpswell Maine Including the Ancient Territory Known As Pejepscot
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (September, 1989)
Authors: George Augustus Wheeler and Henry Warren Wheeler
Average review score:

Excellent historical reference for these towns
This is an excellent reference guide to placenames, geneaology, streets, and early title chains for these three communities. In addition, it is full of anecdotes regarding colonial life in Mid Coast Maine from the late 17th century almost to the end of the 19th century. Published in 1877-8, it is surprisingly accurate in its portrayal of events which took place two hundred years before. Most of the information comes from the records of the Pejepscot Proprietors, a group of wealthy men who had the grants from the King necessary for selling property to settlers. This book has been my best aid for framing out the history of a parcel or area of land in any of these towns. As a Professional Land Surveyor, I could not work in my field and have the most complete information in my files without it. Home: Chronicle of a North Country Life
Published in Hardcover by Stewart, Tabori & Chang (May, 1998)
Author: Beth Powning
Average review score:

Photographs that make you breathe deep, and prose to match
Not precisely a story, or an essay, this book is a life caught in pages and images. The photographs are like thoughts, simple and multi-layered at the same time, full of details of color and texture; palpable. We long for honesty from our friends and neighbors - this is it. Each word is thoughtful, but not studied. She lets you in, to the center of a life. If you love the physical-ness of books, smooth pages, the smell, a nice compact size, print, lovely little flourishes at the end of chapters, you will hold this book often. Don't mistake me, it is not cloying, just satisfying. After all this, what is the book about? One woman's journey to Canada in the late 1960's to buy an old farm, and somehow fit into the local community and make a home and a life. That's it, but it's enough.
